Workplace ECG (Electrocardiography)

Summary. Electrocardiography (ECG) is a medical examination that records the electrical activity of the heart within the scope of workers' health surveillance. Under the relevant legislation, the ECG recording is performed in accordance with the designated standard; the calibration of the device used is maintained at regular intervals by authorized services. The recording is carried out by medical examination personnel in the relevant field; the results obtained are evaluated by the workplace physician of the workplace, and upon request, reporting of the measurements is done by a cardiology specialist. The examination may be performed at a fixed center or directly at the workplace with a mobile occupational health vehicle.

Device Standard and Calibration

The ECG recording is performed in accordance with the relevant standard. Since the reliability of measurement results depends on the technical accuracy of the device used, calibration of the ECG device is carried out at regular intervals by authorized services (Art.13/1). The fact that calibration is a continuous obligation calls for a periodic maintenance approach rather than a one-time procedure; in this way, the recording accuracy of the device is preserved over time.

Personnel Performing the Recording

The ECG recording is performed by medical examination personnel authorized in the relevant field (Art.13/2). This provision requires the application stage of the examination to be carried out by healthcare staff with defined qualifications, and positions the recording procedure as a task separate from the evaluation stage.

Evaluation of Results and Reporting

The results obtained from the recording are evaluated by the workplace physician of the workplace. Where separate reporting of the measurements is requested, this reporting is done by a cardiology specialist (Art.13/3). Routine evaluation and specialist reporting are thus separated from each other; request-based further evaluation is assigned to a distinct medical specialty.

Method of Application

The ECG examination may be performed at a fixed center or directly at the workplace with a mobile occupational health vehicle. This flexibility allows workers to access the examination within the scope of health surveillance without leaving the workplace; in both methods of application, the rules concerning the device standard, calibration, the personnel performing the recording and the evaluation of results apply in the same way.
